The greatest photography in the history of men's and women's sports, made by David Gonzales on July 10, 1999 during the FIFA Women's World Cup.

Women's world cup FLAshback

After 24 years this photograph is finally making its way from my archives to the internet. It's none other than U.S. Women's National team soccer player Brandi Chastain ripping off her jersey in jubilation after she scored the winning penalty kick vs. China in the 1999 FIFA Women's World Cup on July 10, 1999 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA.

Why wasn't I behind the barricade on the field with the rest of the credentialed photographers? What camera and lens was I using? How many frames did I have left in that roll of slide film? (Yes film!!) How did I successfully manage to bring a professional camera AND a 16 lbs. lens into the Rose Bowl without a credential? How did I get a ticket to the biggest event in sports that day?

I'll be sharing my entire story during the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup for anyone who is curious.

Plus, I'll share more photos from what I believe is the one of the most valuable rolls of film in sports history.
